Charlie Morey, a Maine native living in Los Angeles, has been a photographer for more than 25 years. He started with a Minolta 35mm viewfinder camera and processed black-and-white film and prints in his various home-darkroom setups in the late 1960s/early 1970s. After several years as an aspiring amateur, he upgraded his equipment to Nikon and moved into professional work by shooting action photographs of fellow motocross racers in South Florida. He submitted that work to Cycle News, a weekly motorcycling newspaper, and ultimately was offered a job as an Associate Editor where he spent the next several years traveling the country covering off-highway racing events.
In 1982, after having moved to Southern California as Editor of the National edition of Cycle News, he moved on to create Dirt Rider Magazine for Petersen Publishing Company. Dirt Rider is now the largest circulation magazine of its genre in the world.
Morey left Petersen after 14 years as Editor/Editorial Director in the Motorcycle/Bicycle Division when he discovered the World Wide Web and became fascinated by the new electronic media. His equipment also changed when he added a Sony digital camera to his repertoire. Although the Mavica MVC-FD91 floppy-disk camera falls short as a professional tool, he carries it constantly and has rediscovered photography as a hobby and enjoyable pastime.
He is currently focusing on design/composition work of subjects found in everyday life. Some of his other digital photography work can be found here:

The "leaf behinds" work you’ve just viewed was shot during a three-day vacation trip back to Maine to visit his family. The Chicago shoot took place on a single day, a stop in the Windy City during the same vacation to visit his wife’s family. (Kept him out of mischief as Amy and her mom shopped Michigan Avenue.) The "reflections" pictures were shot on a Saturday afternoon in his driveway, and the Y.A.R.D. work was accumulated from short shoots, which took place over a half-dozen weekends.
Charlie’s always interested in hearing feedback on his personal work and is happy to share his photographic knowledge. If you’d like to send him an email, please click here!
